Technology

The grid as a marketplace for flexibility.

Our patented price communication turns island grids, micro-grids and grid cells into real-time marketplaces for energy and flexibility. No additional communication network required.

Two signals

Grid physics, translated into prices.

State variables such as frequency or energy flow reflect the situation in the grid. We turn them into signals that every grid participant can receive, understand and act on.

Balance Indicator (BI)

Do supply and consumption match?

Derived from the energy flow into or out of a grid area, or from the grid frequency in island grids. When the sun shines and the wind blows, the BI shows low prices. Flexible consumers benefit by drawing power at those times.

ScarcitySurplus
Congestion Indicator (CI)

Is the grid reaching its limit?

Shows when transformers or lines are reaching their physical limit, for example during high evening load. Devices then shift their demand before a bottleneck occurs. This saves on grid expansion.

Smart devices

A small software agent in every device.

The agent can be built into standard device controllers at very low unit cost. It charges the EV when power is plentiful, while respecting user settings and technical constraints. Learning algorithms continuously improve the results.

  • Integrates seamlessly into existing energy systems
  • Easy to operate, maintain and control in an emergency
  • No private data leaves the building
Heat pumpPre-heats when power is cheap. The heat store becomes a virtual battery.
Electric carCharges by the desired departure time, preferably with solar power.
Battery storageCharges during surplus, feeds in during scarcity.
ProcessesCooling, pumps and water treatment run when it is cheapest.

Automatic merit order

The market ranks flexibility by cost.

All devices take part in the market directly and act in the way that is cheapest for their owners. The market is fully transparent and creates an order in which the cheapest flexibility is used first.

Example: who responds first?
Battery storage
Heat pump
Electric car
Washing machine

Open and interoperable

Compatible with European standards.

In the EU project InterConnect, we integrated our solution into the SAREF ontology (Smart Appliance Reference) and the Semantic Interoperability Framework. External signals such as dynamic energy and grid tariffs complement local optimisation.
